Picking Your Ideal Groomer

I am often asked, "How will I know if you're the groomer for me?". And time after time, I am stumped when asked on the spot! So I have put together a list of necessary topics to cover when selecting a groomer. The next time you are searching for the perfect groomer to give Fluffy a haircut, remember, C.U.T.S. Cost, Understanding, Time, Skills and Services.

C: Cost

Cost is always a factor in selecting a service provider, and grooming is no different. Before beginning your pet groomer search, look at your budget and determine what price range you will be searching for. Also consider how often your pet will get groomed. If you have a high maintenance pet, you will need a 2-6 week schedule based on coat condition. If you have a low maintenance pet, you will need a 6-8 week schedule, based on coat condition and your/your groomer's preference.

U: Understanding & Upholding

As a pet parent, there are many concerns about dropping your pet off at the groomers. Before contacting any groomers, make a list of any questions or concerns you may have. While it is unlikely to be able to do a walkthrough of their grooming area due to insurance restrictions, most groomers will give you as much information and reassurance as they possibly can. Here are a few key questions to ask your groomer:

  • Do you groom one-on-one, or will other pets be present? (Both are good options, it's just your preference which one you'll use!)

  • What, if any, vaccinations do you require? What cleaning agents do you use?

  • Will my pet have access to water? Will my pet be given treats?

  • Do you have any further education or certifications? (This is a tricky one! The grooming industry is not regulated. So any higher education is paid for by the groomer, and usually shows an initiative to better themselves.)

Once all of your questions have been answered, then you need to lay out what you expect from a groomer. If Fluffy is timid, elderly, or fragile, then that must be brought to the groomer's attention before an appointment is made. This way, you can both uphold your end of the bargain: giving Fluffy the best grooming experience possible.

T: Time and Scheduling

This one seems really basic and self explanatory, but it definitely needs to be noted. When selecting a groomer, you have to find one who has openings for timeframes you are available. If you work 9-5 Monday through Friday, you will need to find someone who is open on weekends, or is comfortable with your pet staying all day. If you have a job where you are on call, and scheduling changes frequently, you may want to contact a larger corporation who has multiple employees. Scheduling is also a key factor. Some, if not most, small businesses have a single or few employees, which means that they tend to book out quickly. When contacting these businesses, keep in mind that it may be preferred to book in advance so that your appointment is reserved for when you need it.

S: Skills and Services

The last topic to consider during the groomer search is your new groomer's skill set and what services they offer. If you are looking for a show quality groom, you will want to search for competitive or show groomers in your area. If you would like to add color, or creative grooming styles, you will need to search for creative groomers. If your pet is aggressive or has any health concerns, you may want to seek out a vet groomer. When booking an appointment with any groomer, make sure that you go over what services you're looking to have done, and make sure that they offer them, or have skills to complete them.
